Self-Guided Cinque Terre Hiking Wineries and Castles
Cinque Terre Cooperative, Riomaggiore (Cinque Terre)
(Free entrance) Cinque Terre grapes are grown exclusively on ancient man-made terraces supported by dry stone walls. This challenging environment makes for very limited wine production. The Cinque Terre Cooperative is the largest producer with over 300 farmer members. Open to the public mornings only, Monday through Friday.
Vernazza Castle, Vernazza (Cinque Terre)
(Entrance fee) Vernazza's medieval castle, Belforte, was built in the mid-1500's to protect the village from marauding pirates. The Torre Doria (Doria Tower) is close to the sea. The top of the tower offers spectacular views over the village, the port, and the sea.
Doria Castle Portovenere, Portovenere
(Entrance fee) Portofino’s Doria Castle was built by the Genoese between the 12th and 17th centuries. Narrow medieval streets lead up to the castle where there are fine views of the sea and the picturesque San Pietro Church on the edge of the promontory.
